What is an Infinitive?

An infinitive is 'to' + base verb. It functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb. Certain verbs require an infinitive as their complement — not a gerund.

Formation and Use

Form

to + V₁ (e.g., to work, to submit, to manage)

As noun (subject)

To lead effectively requires strong communication.

As noun (object)

The board decided to postpone the launch.

As adverb (purpose)

She studied hard to pass the certification exam.

Verbs + infinitive ONLY

want, need, agree, decide, plan, hope, expect, manage, offer, refuse, promise, tend, fail, choose

Example Sentences
