The Second Conditional describes hypothetical, unreal, or unlikely present/future situations. The speaker knows the condition is not currently true and is imagining a different reality.
Formula
Standard
If + past simple, would + V₁
To be (all persons)
If I / he / she were... (formal; 'was' is informal/spoken)
Result variations
could / might instead of would in the result clause
Example Sentences
If I were the CEO, I would prioritise employee wellbeing.
If we had more resources, we could finish ahead of schedule.
She would accept the offer if the salary were higher.
If the company moved headquarters, many staff would relocate.

Common Mistakes
If the team worked harder, they would have finished by now.

Second Conditional result clause: would + V₁ (base verb), not 'would have + PP' (that is Third Conditional).
If I was the director, I would change things.
If I were the director, I would change things.
In formal/written English, use 'were' for all persons in Second Conditional.
