Conditionals

First Conditional

First Conditional

The First Conditional describes real or likely future situations. The condition is possible and the speaker believes it may actually happen.

Formula

Standard

If + present simple, will + V₁

With unless

Unless + present simple, will + V₁ (unless = if not)

Variations

can / may / might / should / must instead of will in the result clause

Example Sentences

If the supplier misses the deadline, we will cancel the contract.
Unless sales improve, we will reduce costs in Q3.
If the client approves the design, production will start immediately.
Will you join the project if you finish your current assignment?
If the system crashes again, the IT team will investigate.
Unless we receive a deposit, we cannot hold the booking.
If demand increases, the company may need to hire more staff.
We will proceed if the board gives final approval.

Common Mistakes

The 'if' clause always uses Present Simple — never 'will' — in First Conditional.
