Reported Questions

Reported Questions

Reported questions use normal statement word order (subject + verb), NOT the inverted order of direct questions. Do NOT add a question mark. Tenses backshift as in reported statements.

Structure

Wh-questions

asked + wh-word + subject + verb (NOT auxiliary inversion)

Yes/No questions

asked whether / if + subject + verb

Key rule

NO question mark | NO inverted word order | NO 'do/does/did' auxiliary

Example Sentences

He asked when the new branch would open.
She asked where the meeting room was.
The client asked whether the delivery had arrived.
The interviewer asked if I had experience with project management.
He asked what time the conference call was scheduled.
She asked how many candidates had applied for the position.
The manager asked why the report had not been submitted.
He asked whether the proposal had been reviewed.
She inquired how long the project would take.
The director asked who had approved the additional expense.

Common Mistakes

She asked me where was the meeting room.

She asked me where the meeting room was.

Reported questions use S+V order (no inversion). Remove 'was' from its inverted position.

He asked when will the project finish?

He asked when the project would finish.

No question mark and no future 'will' in reported speech (backshift to 'would').
