Prepositions

What are Prepositions?

Prepositions show relationships between a noun/pronoun and other words in a sentence — including time, place, direction, and manner. Many verbs, adjectives, and nouns in English require a specific preposition that must be memorised as a fixed collocation.

Key Preposition Groups

Time: in / on / at

in (months, years, centuries) | on (days, dates) | at (exact times, holidays)

Place: in / on / at

in (enclosed spaces, cities, countries) | on (surfaces, streets) | at (exact points)

Direction

to (destination) | from (origin) | into (movement inside) | onto (movement on top)

Fixed collocations

responsible FOR | interested IN | consist OF | depend ON | result IN | contribute TO
